News

A large construction project is about to take place in the heart of Salzburg's old town: On one side, the State of Salzburg will comprehensively renovate the New Residence. On the other side, the Salzburg Museum will expand into the second inner courtyard of the New Residence and realize the "Belvedere Salzburg" in collaboration with the Austrian Gallery Belvedere. Due to the comprehensive renovation and site expansion, the Salzburg Museum in the New Residence will remain closed until approximately spring 2027.

The award-winning Salzburg Museum in the New Residence is a museum with character. With a total exhibition space of 3,000 m², permanent exhibitions and changing special exhibitions showcase the art and cultural history of the city and province of Salzburg.

Unique Salzburg

On the first floor of the Neue Residenz, the Salzburg Museum is dedicated to the uniqueness of Salzburg with objects from all collection areas. From antiquity to the present: Modern and colorful exhibition rooms invite visitors to wander through the epochs and explain how Salzburg became what it is. Unique!

Myth of Salzburg

On the second floor of the Neue Residenz, the myth of Salzburg is explored. Romantic painters, writers, and scientists spread their enthusiasm for the area around Salzburg through pictures and texts throughout Europe. Visitors learn how Salzburg rose to become a Baroque city and how the urban structures developed after the end of the archbishopric around 1800, which led to the emergence of tourism and the resulting 'myth' of this city.

The Art Hall

The Art Hall in the Salzburg Museum is located beneath the inner courtyard of the Neue Residenz. It is a multifunctional, two-part hall equipped with a continuous light ceiling. Each year, three major special exhibitions are presented in the remarkable premises.
